Why I’m running for Alpine City Council

Since January 2008 I’ve served on the Alpine Planning Commission. In preparation for the meetings I research the issues, visit locations being discussed, talk with citizens, and get perspectives from neighboring cities. On the city council I will listen to the citizens, search for creative solutions, and respect the rights of individuals while considering what is best for the community. On the Planning Commission I’ve shown that I can make decisions using common sense based on principles of good government.

On the Alpine City Council I will focus on:

  • Frugal Management of City Resources
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Encouraging Community Involvement
  • Crime Prevention

Frugal Management of City Resources

In this economically difficult time, when we have experienced a loss of revenue to the city, we need to focus on the basic infrastructure (roads, sewer, etc.). Frugality, not increasing taxes, is the primary answer to lost revenue. We also need to be friendly to business which can help increase revenue. Careful planning for future growth is also critical for maintaining the integrity of our neighborhoods.

Emergency Preparedness

Our city officials have done much to prepare for community wide emergencies. However, studies of actual disasters show that without citizen preparation it is hard for local officials to be effective. We all need to prepare for disasters such as earthquakes.

Encouraging Community Involvement

Citizen involvement strengthens our community. My own involvement includes helping with Alpine Days, serving a term on Westfield Elementary’s School Community Council and becoming CERT trained. I’m grateful for the many people who serve our community in such things as community theatre, coaching sport teams, Community Emergency Response Teams, Alpine Youth Council, helping with school programs, and many other things.

Each of us sets an example of civility. Governments spend seemingly endless hours trying to resolve issues that could be solved by citizens trying a little harder to be good neighbors. The solution to many of our community problems is an increased commitment to civility. Try helping a sick or elderly neighbor, setting an example of respect for the law, picking up a piece of trash, expressing gratitude to a public servant or a community volunteer, helping in a school or community activity, and being a courteous, careful driver.

Crime Prevention

Teaching our youth respect for our community and respect for others is critical to having a safe community. Law enforcement as well as neighborhood watches can help with accountability and with protecting our neighborhoods from negative influences.

What do you think?

Let me know what issues are on your mind. Let’s work together to keep Alpine a great community.

I would be honored to serve you on Alpine’s City Council. I would appreciate your vote on November 3, 2009.
